The island’s natural beauty will take your breath away, no matter which way you turn. However, many of these trails can be very strenuous and many are restricted to the public for safety reasons. It is very important to stay on approved trails, research your the trail, gear up properly, and always check the weather before you start your hike. #5 – Moalepe Trail

Moalepe trail is located on the east side of the island. It starts with a gradual incline offering amazing views of Makaleha falls looking back into the ocean. Lush tropical forest with a great mixture of native and introduced vegetation. Depending on the time of year, you’ll indulge on native fruit from one of the many fruit trees along the trail. Moalepe Trail enters the Halelea Forest Reserve after about a mile. About the 2.25 mile mark you’ll meet with the Kuilau Trail where you can continue your stunning hike.

#4 – Kuilau Trail

Kuilau Trail is also located on the east side of the island. Starting at the Keahua Arboretum and later connecting with the Moalepe Trail. From the get go, this trail will introduce you to a variety of native vegetation. At about one mile into your hike, you’ll be able to relax in a grassy field bordered by an Ohia forest. All while enjoying the breathtaking views of Mountain Wai’ale’ale, one of the wettest spots on the planet, and majestic views of the south shore, and sleeping giant mountain.

#3 – Awa’awapuhi Trail

The Awa’awapuhi Trail is located on the west side of the island in the heart of Kokee State Park. This trail will take you to the rim of the Nualolo and the Awa’awapuhi valley. With 360° panoramic views of the staggering canyons, you can’t go wrong with hiking the Awa’awapuhi Trail.

#2 – Nu’alolo Trail

The Nu’alolo Trail is also located in Kokee State Park. The Naulolo trail is very unique. It starts off at approximately 3600ft and ends at approximately 2200ft above sea level. You’ll notice the drastic change in vegetation and humidity. To avoid the steep hike on your way back, you can circuit back through the Awa’awapuhi Trail. The Nu’alolo Ridge Trail connects with the Awa’awapuhi Trail creating a loop around the canyon’s ridge.

#1 – Kalalau Trail

Kalalau Trail is one of the best hiking trails in Kauai; and is located on the north shore of the island. Kalalau Trail is considered the most strenuous and stunning trail on the island, but worth the hike. The first 2 miles of the trail will end at Hanakapi’ai Beach. You can continue your adventure to Hanakapi’ai Falls. Take plenty of water and snacks for the journey, proper shoes and prepare for unpredictable weather. Do not cross the river during flash floods or high water. The challenging trail to the falls will take you 2 miles deeper into the Hanakapiai Valley where you’ll eventually find the 120ft waterfall!
